A collaborative workshop taught by DJ Pettitt and Deryn Mentock

Come mingle with Deryn and DJ, in this very unique, two-day, mixed media workshop!  This collaboration will take you beyond painting and embellishment.  After creating a beautifully gilded art piece in class, we will send you home brimming with enough technique, information and inspiration to use in a wide range of artwork; from jewelry making to journals, including decorative elements that can be used in book making, assemblage, collage, altered art and everything in between!

Always wanted to try papermaking but didn’t want to commit to an all day class? Maybe take a little break from work with a paper-snack lunch? Well, here’s your chance to come and play for a couple of hours. This class will give you an opportunity to explore some of the possibilities of paper. This is a beginning class where the focus is on forming sheets of paper, ways to press and dry paper and, best of all, the hands-on experience of making your own paper. We call it a sampler because you never know what kind of pulp we’ll have on hand that day but we know it will be delicious--just like Whitman’s. Please note--you may only sign up for one Papermaking Snack class per quarter. This class is designed to give you a taste of papermaking and is meant for beginners. Thanks for understanding!   Origami Flora & Fauna (Cindy Iverson)            Fri July 11                    1:00 – 3:00 pm

So many folds, so little time! Ever want do origami but get overwhelmed by the directions? Come and learn basic origami and techniques to create delightful origami flora and fauna.  Each participant will receive the new Origami Craft Pad by Chronicle books in the class!! Bring scissors, pencil, bone folder and ruler.
 
 

Letterpress 101 (Mike O'Connor)           $195 or register by July 2nd for $175.00           

Sat  3 sessions: Jul 12th --12--noon–3; Jul 19 & 26—noon - 4:30pm

This class offers a chance to experience the basics of letterpress printing on clamshell style presses. Hand setting type and printing your own stationery, business card, or a short phrase or poem will be the focus of this workshop. In the first class, you will learn how to handle a composing stick, set type, spacing material and furniture. Place the chase in the press, pull the steel handle, and feel the impression of the type pressing into fine papers on an old-style, tabletop platen press. The next two classes are your project focus—it’s your chance to get your cards or stationery printed so give it some thought—you’ll have several hours in the next two work sessions to get a lot done!   Bookbinding Basics (Cindy Iverson)    Sat July 12                  10:30-1:00 pm

This is an introductory class for anyone who wants to learn the basic techniques of bookbinding. Participants will finish two structures—an accordion book and simple multi-section book. The structure of the book, adhesives, paper, book cloth, and grain direction will be discussed. Materials for the book will be supplied. Bring a cutting mat, xacto knife, bone folder, ruler, scissors, pencil, paper piercer and a couple of brushes for gluing that are apx. ½” to 1” wide.
 
 

Coptic Stitch Book (Gary Iverson)

$70 or register by July 2nd for $60                     Sat July 12                   1:30 – 4:00 pm             

Create a contemporary version of the ancient Coptic binding and learn to bind a book using two needles at once!  This class will take you through the steps of constructing and designing your own hard cover Coptic bound book.  This binding has decorative exposed stitching across the spine that gives the book the ability to lie flat when open. Book boards, waxed linen and paper for pages and covers will be supplied. Bring a cutting mat, xacto knife, bone folder, scissors, paper piercer, pencil and ruler.  Note: This is an intermediate structure.  Bookbinding 101 is a prerequisite for this class.
 
  Alternative Photo—Cyanotype (Adam Draper/Cindy Iverson)

Cyanotype is one of the earliest photographic printing processes. A Prussian blue is formed when a mixture of chemicals and iron salts are exposed to a strong UV light source--which in our case is the sun! Come and learn this fascinating 19th Century photographic printing process. You will hand-coat fine art papers with light sensitive emulsions and make exposures of images from digital or photographic negatives or from objects such as leaves, lace, feathers, glass and more. Interesting images will be available for you to experiment with and information on how to make low-low negatives will be provided to you prior to the class. Making digital negatives will be covered in the class. Bring an apron, lace, objects with interesting shapes, negative images on transparencies and or negatives. For the digital negative portion, bring a disc with images no larger than 4x6 that you want to print.  Fine art paper, pictorico film and chemicals will be provided in your materials fee

  Fun & Fresh Handmade Cards (Cindy Iverson)             Fri July 25        1:00 – 3:00 pm

Come and make fabulous cards with us. Let your friends and family know that you are thinking of them by dropping one of these little jewels in the mail to them! You’ll have the opportunity to make several cards using fabulous paper from Basic Grey. Included in the class are decorative paper, cardstock, tags and envelopes. This will be a fast paced fun class and you MUST, MUST, MUST have your own tools to work with: cutting mat, pencil, metal ruler, mono tape adhesive, regular scissors, bone folder, scoring tool and other items to embellish with. After doing a number of these classes, we find that a personal paper trimmer (tonic, fiskars, etc) is an absolute requirement for you to bring. You will need to cut pieces and strips quickly in this class—you just can’t do it accurately and fast enough with a ruler and exacto or by using scissors. This class is for all skill levels.

 
 

Cloth, Paper, Journal (Cindy Iverson)               Sat July 26       10:30 – 1:30 pm

Paper artists love fabric and fiber artists love paper. So we thought we would marry the two mediums into one happy journal! This class will use fabric as a base and layers of decorative and thin papers to create a fabulous book cover. Materials for the cloth/paper and book will be provided. Bring a cutting mat, xacto knife, bone folder, ruler, scissors, pencil, paper piercer and a couple of brushes for gluing that are apx. ½” to 1” wide. Also bring bits of paper ephemera and beads. Bring an apron because this can get messy!
 
  Doodle Stitching (Cindy Iverson)                                  Sat  July 26      2:00 - 5:00 pm

Sewing on paper is a fun and fresh technique that has tons of possibilities! Sewing can be a structural element for holding things together or a decorative element in embellishing.  Come and learn about the tools, stitches, techniques and applications of sewing on paper. Participants will receive the new Sublime Stitching Craft Pad by Chronicle Books as part of the class. We will create a soft cover sewn book during the class. Bring a cutting mat, xacto knife, bone folder, ruler, scissors, pencil, paper piercer and a couple of brushes for gluing that are apx. ½” to 1” wide. Also bring beads that you may want to add and paper or fabric that you want to practice on.

Make a hip and cool journal to record all your dreams and schemes! In this class, you’ll learn to use the copic airbrush system along with other mixed media to create totally unique graphics on your hardbound journal!  Book boards, cover material, waxed linen and paper for pages and covers will be supplied. Bring collage ephemera that you may want to use, a cutting mat, xacto knife, bone folder, ruler, scissors, pencil, paper piercer and a couple of brushes for gluing that are apx. ½” to 1” wide.

  Printing without a Press (Cindy Iverson)          Sat Aug 30                   10:30 – 1:30 pm

$75 or register by Aug 20th for $65

Want to make prints but don’t have a press? Low- tech printmaking processes may be your dream come true! (Well at least for printmaking) Come and learn a slew of low-tech printmaking processes to create fabulous prints! This workshop introduces techniques and tips to get you on your way! Printmaking supplies and paper for a print exchange with your fellow printmakers will be provided. Bring scissors, pencil and papers that you want to print on or experiment with. Also, wear your lawn mowing clothes or at least bring an apron—this can be a messy process and ink is always very attracted to clothing.

To Registration:
Cash, checks and credit cards are accepted for registration at The Paper Studio located at 520 E. Southern Avenue, Tempe Arizona. Phone registration is accepted at 480-557-5700 with a credit card. Classes must be paid for in advance to reserve your seat.
Class policy:
Payment is required with registration. Registration fees are refundable if cancellation is received one week (7 days) prior to the class. A $10.00 service charge will be deducted from the class refund. For visiting or out-of-town artists see policies associated with each particular class. It is important to register in advance because instructors need to prepare the appropriate amount of materials--we reserve the right to cancel or reschedule a class as required. If the class is cancelled we will gladly credit or refund your registration fee.  
Class size:
All classes are limited to 8-10 students (unless otherwise noted). Only registered participants may attend classes--extra friends, relatives, spouses or children are not allowed to attend with the participants unless they are registered in the class.
Special Discount:
A 10% discount is available on your purchases on the day of your class (excluding class fees, publications, gift certificates, and sale items). Art in an Hour Classes are not eligible for the discount due to their unbelievable low, low prices.
Private Parties: 
Private parties are available upon request and availability of our classroom. You can choose a project, a teacher, and a day and time. We'll help you work out the cost and materials. Call us and we will help you coordinate a great way to get together with friends!
